Out to Play's unique approach to education emphasizes child-centred, inquiry-driven learning and connecting through play on the land. Building on its successful model in Ottawa, Out to Play now offers these enriching, outdoor programs in the beautiful, sustainable environment of Kemptville Campus—an expansive site of 630 acres that includes forests, wetlands, and farmland, as well as recreational and meeting facilities.
The Kemptville Campus is a not-for-profit organization that operates on the site of the former Kemptville Agricultural School. Kemptville Campus is committed to supporting a diversity of educational programs and creating a welcoming community where people can play, learn, and grow together. Out to Play will be based in the campus greenhouses and adjacent classroom, providing indoor spaces in winter, accessible parking, all-gender bathrooms, and easy drop-off locations.
The programs will take advantage of the campus's diverse 360-acre forest, which includes mixed hardwood, conifer, and maple plantations. This natural setting is perfect for outdoor learning, including community sugar harvesting activities during the late winter and early spring.
Initial Programs include:
● Wednesday Fox Program (Ages 4-10)
● Thursday Wolf Program (Ages 8-12)
● Friday Owl Program (Ages 2.5-4)
● Friday Family Program (For Parents/Guardians and their Children of All Ages)
These established programs focus on building resilience, and encouraging curiosity and a love for learning, through play.
“It’s always our vision to broaden accessibility to outdoor play. We know it’s good for children’s development and well-being. We are so excited to expand Out to Play to Kemptville,” said Lara Purvis, Director of Out to Play. “This expansion allows us to offer more children and families the opportunity to engage with nature in a meaningful way, within the beautiful setting of Kemptville Campus.”
